How to keep your White Venetian blinds looking their best

Venetian blinds are a great way to add some elegance to your window and the perfect way to finish off your room.

They are also ideal for controlling the amount of light in you would like by easily tilting the slats to either block the light completely or allowing just enough to come into the room and lighten up your home.

However, if you are an owner of white Venetian blinds then you are probably wondering how to keep them looking as fresh as when you first bought them. Regular cleaning will help you keep your blinds looking their best and it’s actually really easy and simple. Below are a selection of methods which we have broken down for you;

Prepare before you start cleaning

  • Close the blinds completely; by closing the blinds as if you are going for maximum privacy, it will allow you to see any dirt which you need to clean and will also let you easily clean the blinds in one motion
  • Tie back and move and other furniture away from the blinds
  • Wipe away any noticeable marks with a towel before cleaning
  • Check your blinds for any stains or debris. Using a mild cleaning spray, generally, wipe away the stains using a cleaning towel. Next using a paper towel carefully dry your blinds. This prevents any marks from spreading while cleaning.

Method One: Cleaning with a duster

    • Pick what you are going to use as a duster - whether you choose a cotton glove, a dusting cloth or even an old sock, it doesn’t matter! As long as it’s something that is clean and soft.
    • Clean each slat- middle to the side!
    • Starting in the middle of the slat, work your way to the one side. Once you have finished cleaning one side, then return back to the middle and start cleaning the other side. You will need to complete this action for every slat.
    • Once you have finished cleaning all the slats then you will need to open and close your blinds on the opposite side and repeat this process.
    • This method is time-consuming as you have to clean each slat individually, however it does remove the dust effectively.

Points to remember

  • Starting in the middle and working your way out; this makes sure you don’t bring dust from one side to the other
  • Be gentle when pressing on the blinds and don’t push them as you brush the edges
  • Check your cleaning device and use a new one if it gets too dirty
  • Also, clean any handles or string from the blind using the same method as the slats.

Method Two: Cleaning with detergent to remove stains

Pick the right detergent for your blinds -

Firstly we recommend if the stains can be lifted off with water if you have tried and this didn’t then try one of the right detergents for your blinds;

Wooden blinds = Wood cleaner or Furniture polish

  • Spray each individual slat and use a clean sock or cloth to clean the stain.
  • Dry the blinds with a cloth
  • Most wooden Venetians are finished with a stain-resist, so a dry wipe and a clean cloth is enough to polish them off.

Non-wooden blinds = self-made detergent/ mild multi-purpose detergent

Making your own cleaning detergent; 50% white vinegar and 50% water

  • Fill a bucket of 50-60ml of water and put in equal part of white vinegar and then stir. If you need something a little stronger for your blinds, then add some washing-up liquid (50-60ml).
  • Don’t add more vinegar
  • Dampen a clean sponge or cloth into the mixture (don’t soak it)
  • Wipe down the blinds until the stain is gone (start in the centre and work your way out to the edge of the stain)
  • Don’t press down too hard that you end up bending the slats
  • Dry the blinds with a cloth.

Points to remember

    • Pick the right detergent for your blinds
    • Scrub the stain away but be careful not to apply too much pressure and blend your blinds
    • Wipe down any moisture that you notice and check to see if all of your stains have gone
    • If you can’t seem to get those nasty stains away then you’re better off performing a deep clean for your blinds, rather than getting rough and bending the slats out of place.

Method Three: Cleaning with a vacuum

  • Attach duster or upholstery brush to your vacuum cleaner

To use this method you must have a;

  • A vacuum with a hose to reach the blinds
  • A duster or upholstery brush attachment

If you don’t have either of these then we recommend you use the methods above to avoid scratching or damaging your blinds!

If you do have the items above, then;

  •  Switch the Vacuum on to the Lowest Power Setting, and Start Cleaning (centre to the side!)
  • We recommend that you keep the blinds closed while cleaning them to avoid the disappointment of a broken slat.
  • You simply place the vacuum on the slat and just like method one, you start from the middle and move it to one side, return back to the middle and move to the other side.
  • Repeat this until each slat is clean and then open and reverse your blinds and repeat.

Points to remember

  • Remember to use the right attachment (duster or upholstery)
  • Set to the lowest power setting
  • Start cleaning in the centre of the blind and work your way out to the side, and repeat for the opposite direction
  • Be gentle
  • Double-check the slats for any dirt when you’re done as you might need to go over them a few times to get all of the dust.
